Carla van Gils

Managing Director KWF

“Joining KWF was never about moving away from science. It was about broadening my impact. Great research is essential, but on its own it is not enough. Lasting progress against cancer requires collaboration across society, sustained investment in research, translating discoveries into practice, and influencing policies that improve people’s lives. That is where KWF can make the difference.”

I joined the Executive Board of KWF Dutch Cancer Society in 2021 after more than 25 years in cancer research, while continuing my role as Professor of Cancer Epidemiology at UMC Utrecht, where I focus on improving the early detection of cancer. Science has always been the foundation of my work, but KWF gave me the opportunity to broaden my impact beyond research alone.

At KWF, we fund world-class cancer research across the entire cancer continuum. We also help turn scientific discoveries into real-world impact by accelerating implementation, advocating for better policies, and mobilising society to invest in a future with less cancer through fundraising and partnerships. We know KWF cannot achieve this alone. By bringing together researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, policymakers, donors, volunteers and many other partners, we can transform knowledge into meaningful improvements for everyone affected by cancer.

Who or what provided your possibilities?

My journey started in cancer research. KWF became my Port of Possibilities—a place where I could build on science and expand its impact through implementation, policy influence, and mobilising society through partnerships.
