Academic Conference

Theme

Over the past twenty-two editions, our internationally renowned keynote speakers have made the Academic Conference one of the most prominent events of the academic year at Erasmus University Rotterdam. The theme of this year’s conference is “Who’s in control? The (r)evolution of management”. The conference will focus on management issues in the past, present and future. Changes in management structures will be illuminated from different perspectives - academic, societal, and business. After the current crisis and the disorder in the financial sector, some changes certainly need to be implemented. Will these changes be evolutionary or revolutionary? With the subprime crisis caused by opportunistic management still in our heads, which stakeholders will be in control in the next decade? In which ways will control structures and power distribution shift between stockholders, employees, suppliers, customers, management and (non)- governmental organisations?

Within an organisation, who is in control  and what is the scope of this control? What control systems are in place? Are we going to revolutionise the way we think about business ethics and management control? At a regional and global level, the
continuous growth of multinationals complicates the role of local stakeholders such as national governments in exercising control over these organisations. When scale increases, responsibility increases. How do large multinationals cope with increasingly demanding stakeholders such as major shareholders and international government bodies like the European Union? What will be the role is of corporate networks in this respect? During the conference, several experts will share their vision and experiences with respect to the future of management control at firm and global levels.
